What is Motability? Motability is a scheme that enables you to turn your disability allowance into a brand new Vauxhall - over 550,000 people currently lease a car using it. It’s designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible - there are no waiting lists, credit checks or lengthy assessment procedures to go through. You don’t even have to drive the vehicle yourself – you can nominate two drivers for free. If you receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement, you are automatically eligible. Contract Hire The scheme is simplicity itself. You just make an Advance Payment (if applicable) and your allowance is converted into a three-year lease on a brand new Vauxhall of your choice. During those three years, all you’ll pay for is fuel and oil – your car is insured, serviced and maintained for you, plus you also get full RAC Breakdown Assistance, tyre and windscreen replacement and a 20,000 mile annual mileage allowance.

Buying a vehicle If you’d prefer to buy your own vehicle, we offer generous discounts on a wide range of models which can be paid for with your allowance. We will arrange the paperwork for you up to a 5 year agreement, and at the end of the term the car is yours to keep. Getting your vehicle adapted Many of the vehicles ordered through the Motability scheme need to be adapted to accommodate their owners’ disabilities or other special needs. Typical adaptations aid driving, improve vehicle access and make the loading and storing of equipment easier. In most cases, these adaptations can be arranged when your vehicle is ordered. We also recommend having a consultation at an independent Mobility Assessment Centre. These centres are staffed by occupational therapists and technical specialists who will advise you exactly which vehicles and adaptations are right for you and your drivers/passengers. There are 17 Mobility Assessment Centres nationwide. You can find out which one’s nearest by visiting www.mobility-centres.org.uk or calling 0800 559 3636.

Armed with all this information, ordering the right vehicle with the right adaptations is easy. Prior to delivery, the adaptations will be supplied and fitted by Motability accredited installers. 

Who can apply Anyone who receives the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or the War Pension Mobility Supplement is eligible for the Motability scheme. Q. How do I apply for a grant?
A. Call Motability on 0844 8000 900 and ask for the Grants Department.

Q. What rate of allowance I am entitled to?
A. The Department Of Work And Pensions (DWP) should have sent you an Award Notice that contains the details of your allowance entitlement. If you haven’t got a copy of this notice, call the DWP on 08457 123 456 and ask them to send you one.

Q. I’m not entitled to the higher rate of the Disability Living Allowance. What do I do now?
A. Don’t worry, we can still help you. Talk to Dickens and we will discuss the other ways available to help you purchase the vehicle you want.
